Thundermug ‎- Thundermug Strikes (1972)

Thundermug ‎- Thundermug Strikes

A Canadian Hard rock band. This is the only album I have. "Africa" is my favorite in the album. Try it!

Album information:

01.Africa
02.Page 125 - What Would You Do - Help Father Sun
03.And They Danced
04.You Really Got Me
05.Fortunes Umbrella
06.Jane ''J'' James
07.Will They Ever
08.Where Am I

Band information:

Thundermug was formed in London, Ontario, Canada, and existed from 1970 to 1976. They regrouped in 1991 and officially disbanded in 2001. As a result of a signing facilitated by their manager, Wyn Anderson, their principal recordings were released by Axe Records, an independent Canadian label that was distributed by London Records in Canada and various labels in the US and elsewhere. Their music was initially distributed in the United States by the Big Tree and the Epic labels. As of 1975, Ta-Daa!! was distributed in the United States by Mercury Records.

The band was initially composed of Joe de Angelis (guitar and vocals), Bill Durst (keyboards and guitar), James Corbett (bass) and Ed Pranskus (drums). Their first album, Thundermug Strikes, recorded at Toronto Soundstudios in the spring of 1972, was produced by Greg Hambleton, owner of Axe Records, and engineered Terry Brown. The album resulted in a Canadian Top 30 hit, "Africa", based on radio interest in what was originally a non-single album song. The first single from the album had been a version of The Kinks' "You Really Got Me". The album is described by reviewer Richie Unterberger as "...above average, early '70s hard rock... It's a minor entry in the style, but a decent minor entry, moving along with real guts and convincing riffs, but not at the expense of fair melodies, well-done vocal harmonies, and unusual progressions."

In 1973, the band recorded its second album, Orbit, at Toronto's Manta Sound. The title track was a Top 40 Canadian single. The album is described by reviewer Richie Unterberger as "probably the best reflection of their straight-ahead, respectable-but-not-brilliant brand of early-'70s hard rock, muscular but reasonably melodic, with inventive interplay between lead and background vocals, ending with a rather impressive facsimile of Jimi Hendrix's noisiest guitar wiggles."

Selections from the first two albums were released in 1973 in the United States by Epic Records, using the title from the first album, Thundermug Strikes. Review Richie Unterberger regarded the release as "confusing...(but) it did a reasonable job of representing the sound of this Canadian hard rock band, including some of its better-known tracks with 'Africa', 'Orbit', 'Garden Green', 'Jane J James', and a cover of the Kinks' "You Really Got Me."

In 1974, the band returned to Toronto Sound and recorded their third album, Ta-Daa, releasing a cover of The Beatles' "Drive My Car" as the first single. The album was released in the United States on Mercury Records.

Ta-Daa was not as successful as the band's two previous releases. Joe de Angelis quit the band following the release of Ta-Daa, and the band continued through 1975 as a trio. The band released one final single in 1975, "Clap Your Hands and Stomp Your Feet", which was a Top 50 single in Canada. The band did not formally break up, but became inactive, as of 1976. Band members then commenced various solo projects. Bill Durst joined a ZZ Top tribute band called Tres Hombres, and later was a member of The Brains, a band that released one album in 1980, on Falcon Records. Joe de Angelis became involved in production work, acting as assistant engineer on Meat Loaf's 1981 album, Dead Ringer. In 1983, Durst released a solo album, Call Billy, on Passport Records. Joe de Angelis contributed background vocals. In 1989, Durst released a cassette-only second solo album,Father Earth, on the independent Cottage Records.

Swampgas - Selftitled (1972)

Swampgas - Selftitled

Another blues band, but to me they have a much more progressive sound than blues. There are a couple mellow tracks, but the rest is all heavy. "Potato Strut" and "Eulogy" does it for me.

03 - The Waiting, E Train Blue

Steel Mill ‎- Green Eyed God (1972)

Steel Mill ‎– Green Eyed God

Steel Mill is a heavy prog rock band from the UK. With a single album released, they must be put in the list of underappreciated bands! Riffs in "Green Eyed God" and "Blood Runs Deep", flutes in "Black Jewel of the Forest" and "Har Fleur" are still waiting to be heard.

Quicksilver Messenger Service - Discography (1968-72)

Quicksilver Messenger Service - Discography

I wanted to have this legendary band on the blog and here it is. Quicksilver is dear to me. Here is all of their albums, with the exception of Solid Silver released in '75. There isn't much I can say about them as we all probably know the band. However they are still very underrated, I'd have never heard of them if I was never interested in psyche rock. Should have been on a hall of fame of some sort. John Cipollina, is also a favorite guitarist of mine, rest in peace tall man.

Album(s) information:

(1968) - Quicksilver Messenger Service
(1969) - Happy Trails
(1969) - Shady Grove
(1970) - Just for Love
(1971) - Quicksilver
(1972) - Comin' Thru

Band information:

Quicksilver Messenger Service gained wide popularity in the San Francisco Bay Area and through their recordings, with psychedelic rock enthusiasts around the globe, and several of their albums ranked in the Top 30 of the Billboard Pop charts. Though not as commercially successful as contemporaries Jefferson Airplane and The Grateful Dead, Quicksilver was integral to the beginnings of their genre. With their jazz and classical influences and a strong folk background, the band attempted to create an individual, innovative sound. Member Dino Valenti drew heavily on musical influences he picked up during the folk revival of his formative musical years. The style he developed from these sources is evident in Quicksilver Messenger Service's swung rhythms and twanging guitar sounds.

After many years, the band has attempted to reform despite the deaths of several members. Recently, original members Gary Duncan and David Freiberg have been touring as the Quicksilver Messenger Service, using various backing musicians.

The Masters Apprentices (or The Masters to fans) were an Australian rock band fronted by Jim Keays on lead vocals, which formed in 1965 in Adelaide, South Australia, relocated to Melbourne in February 1967 and attempted to break into the United Kingdom market from 1970, before disbanding in 1972. Their popular Australian singles are "Undecided", "Living in a Child's Dream", "5:10 Man", "Think About Tomorrow Today", "Turn Up Your Radio" and "Because I Love You". The band launched the career of bass guitarist, Glenn Wheatley, later a music industry entrepreneur and an artist manager for both Little River Band and John Farnham. The band reformed periodically, including in 1987–1988 and again subsequently; they were inducted into the Australian Recording Industry Association(ARIA) Hall of Fame in 1998 alongside The Angels. Both Keays, with His Master's Voice and Wheatley, with Paper Paradise, wrote memoirs in 1999 which included their experiences with the band.

Keays died from pneumonia related to multiple myeloma on 13 June 2014.

Jeronimo - Discography (1970-72)

Jeronimo - Discography

Jeronimo; my second-favorite band in the archive after Frijid Pink. Good hard rock from Germany. They toured with Steppenwolf and actually released an album together with Creedence Clearwater Revival as Spirit Orgaszmus, which I included in the discography. 4 great albums you'll never get bored of. Enjoy!

Album(s) information:

(1970) Cosmic Blues
(1970) Spirit Orgaszmus & Creedence Clearwater Revival
(1971) Jeronimo
(1972) Time Ride

Band information:

Jeronimo was founded in 1969 and in '69/'70 they had their first two hits "He Ya" and "Na Na Hey Hey". With these two chartbreakers, Jeronimo climbed to the number 1 position in almost all European countries.

In 1970 Jeronimo and "Steppenwolf" toured successfully through Germany and in the same year Jeronimo partook in the legendary "Progressive Pop Festival" in Cologne. Following that, Jeronimo shared the headlines with such groups as "Deep Purple" and "Golden Earring" at various European open-air festivals.

In 1970, Jeronimo, together with Creedence Clearwater, presented the album "Spirit Orgaszmus", which was a success throughout all of Europe.

After 30 years and millions of records sold worldwide, Jeronimo is still cult. In 1999/2000, their hits "Na Na Hey Hey" and "He Ya" were re-released on numerous hit-compilations. The CD's "Cosmic Blues", "Time Ride" and "Best of" have been available in record stores since 1991.

After numerous negotiations with "the purple record-company" in Frankfurt, Ringo Funk successfully acquired the rights to all of Jeronimo's songs in November of 2000. In the spring of 2002, 4 new CD's "Jeronimo", "Cosmic Blues", "Time Ride" and "Best of" will be released, which have been digitally mastered from the original recordings. There will be a bonus track on each of the CD's (partially with previously unreleased material).

Frijid Pink - Discography (1970-72)

Frijid Pink - Discography

Here we are, Frijid Pink; my most loved band in the archive. Sometimes I wish they were known world-wide, and sometimes I wish I was the only one who knew their music. Great fucking music, 3 albums. In my opinion, Frijid Pink made the best "House of the Rising Sun" cover, even better than of The Animals'. I want you to listen to Frijid Pink, and at the same time I don't. Go on.

Album(s) information:

Frijid Pink - 1970
Defrosted - 1970
Earth Omen - 1972

Band information:

Frijid Pink was formed when local Detroit-area band the Detroit Vibrations, which featured Stevers and Harris, were joined by guitarist Gary Ray Thompson and singer Tom Beaudry, who later took the stage name Kelly Green. At some point Thompson convinced Vibrations' manager Clyde Stevers (Richard's father) that he was a better musician than the Vibrations' current guitarist. They spent their first two years touring throughout the Southeast Michigan/Detroit area and eventually signed with Parrot Records. Their first two singles, "Tell Me Why" and "Drivin' Blues" (both released in 1969) failed to attract much attention, but their third 1969 effort, a distorted guitar-driven rendition of "House of the Rising Sun," reached the Top Ten on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 in the spring of 1970. This disc sold over one million copies, thereby receiving a gold disc.[1] The track also peaked at No. 4 in the UK Singles Chart.[2] and #3 in the Canadian RPM Magazinecharts. The song was a "filler," using up time at the end of a recording session. The band was so popular in their native Detroit area that a fledgling Led Zeppelin opened for them at Detroit's Grande Ballroom. Frijid Pink often shared billing with the likes of the MC5, the Stooges, the Amboy Dukes, and other local groups of that era.

Frijid Pink's self-titled debut LP followed in 1970, as did their second release Defrosted, with most of the album's writing being provided by duo of Beaudry and Thompson. Subsequent singles including "Sing A Song For Freedom" and a cover of "Heartbreak Hotel" failed to match earlier successes, and after the departure of Beaudry and Thompson, a new lineup was formed featuring David Alexander and later Jon Wearing on vocals, Craig Webb on guitar, and Larry Zelanka on keyboards. This version of the group recorded 1972's Earth Omen. The group would have another lineup in place before re-entering the studio to record 1975's All Pink Inside with Jo Baker on vocals and Larry Popolizio playing the bass.

Elonkorjuu - Harvest Time (1972)

Elonkorjuu - Harvest Time

A band from Finland with great guitars, especially the song "Unfeeling", got my attention first time I listened to it. The song "Captain" includes a solo influenced by the Russian folk song "Polyushka Polye" strange coming from a Finnish band, is it not? Song "Where's the Rising Sun" has a break, so relaxing and trippy, I just love it. Nevertheless, an album worth sharing.

Album information:

01- Unfeeling
02- Swords
03- Captain
04- Praise To Our Basement
05- Future
06- Hey Hunter
07- The Ocean Song
08- Old Man's Dream
09- Me And My Friend
10- A Little Rocket Song
11- Where's The Rising Sun

Band information:

Elonkorjuu was founded in the western Finnish city of Pori in the autumn of 1969. A year later the band was awarded with the second place in the 1970 Finnish Rock Championship contest and was signed by EMI. Elonkorjuu released their debut album Harvest Time in 1972. Today the original pressing is considered the most expensive Finnish vinyl album with a price up to € 1,500. It was re-released as a CD in 2002. During the 1970s Elonkorjuu was often featured in the major Finnish music festivals such as Ruisrock and Pori Jazz.

In 1978 the band released their second album Flying High, Running Fast under the name Harvest, which is an English translation of Elonkorjuu. The album was released by RCA Records and Elonkorjuu's goal was an international breakthrough, but the band finally split instead. The guitarist Jukka Syrenius moved to Norway and released several albums with his new group Jukka Syrenius Band, also featuring some international musicians like the American drummerClifford Jarvis, the South African bassist Johnny Dyani and the Norwegian keyboardist Haakon Graf.

Elonkorjuu was formed again in 2003 and the following year the band released their third studio album. In December 2009 Elonkorjuu played a 40th anniversary concert in Pori Theatre. It was later released as a double live album. In 2012 EMI released a 4-CD boxed set including almost every track the band has ever recorded. The box also includes rare live material from the 1970s. Today the guitarist Jukka Syrenius and bass player Veli-Pekka Pessi are the only original members of the band. The present line-up features the Hungarian-born drummer Zoltán Kárpáti, keyboardist Jussi Reunamäki and the saxophonist Jari Perkiömäki who holds a Doctor of Music degree in jazz music from the Sibelius Academy.

Bulbous Creation ‎- Selftitled (1971-72)

Bulbous Creation ‎- Bulbous Creation

This album is very heavy. Lyrics are dark. Bulbous Creation ‎is evil. I'm actually upset that a band like this is known by nobody at all. I'm sure everyone with an ear to rock music would love this band. Great fucking sound, listen to this album.

Album information:

01 - End Of The Page
02 - Having a Good Time
03 - Satan
04 - Fever Machine Man
05 - Let's Go To The Sea
06 - Hooked
07 - Under The Black Sun
08 - Stormy Monday

Band information:

In 1971, Bulbous Creation poured what little personal surplus they had into a full day of recording at Cavern Studios, tracking enough material for a full length album. The band wouldn’t stay together long enough to save up for a custom pressing on Rock. Singer/guitarist Paul Parkinson was deeply individualistic, and left to perform his songs as he thought they should be, as a solo act. He preferred coffee shops to concert halls, and would stick to his craft another 20 years before hanging it up. Drummer Horstmann followed suit. Jim "Bugs" Wine and guitarist Alan Lewis soldiered on, shortening their name to the more sensible Creation and adding vocalist Wayne Austin, dynamic drummer Tommy Ward, and guitarist Roger Sewell. The Bulbous Creation LP was nearly doomed to oblivion, but for the efforts of Rich Haupt, who issued an unauthorized eight song LP in 1995 on his Rockadelic imprint. Lewis died in 1998 of esophageal cancer. When Paul Parkinson died of leukemia in 2001, a lone copy turned up amongst his possessions, with piece of mind that someone, somewhere, was listening.

Black Sugar - Viajecito (1970-72)

Black Sugar - Viajecito

A Peruvian funk/psychedelic rock band, weird huh? Not really, but their music sure is. I found them through one of their songs, sung in English, "Understanding". Beautiful, I literally spent days listening to that song. Try them!

Album information:

01 - Too Late
02 - Viajecito
03 - The Looser
04 - Understanding
05 - Fuego
06 - Valdez In The Country
07 - When You're Walking
08 - When I Needed Someone
09 - I Want To Believe
10 - Checan
11 - Kathy
12 - All Your Love
13 - Wake Up
14 - This Time
15 - Pussy Cat

Band information:

Black Sugar, the brainchild of Victor "Coco" Salazar and Miguel "Chino" Figueroa, was formed in 1969 under the name Los Far Fen, mainly because the group had a Farfisa and a Fender amplifiers as their only electronic amplification equipment.

Los Far Fen recorded three 45 rpm records with six tunes:original compositions, pop tunes and ballads. Three of those tracks, featured on this CD, show the talented arrangements of "Coco" Salazar and the inspired organ and keyboard solos of "Chino" Figueroa; also determined the future musical direction of the group and their natural ability to play Latin Funk.

In 1970 the group was given the name of Black Sugar by Jaime Delgado Aparicio, a jazz piano player and arranger that at the time was the artistic director of Sono Radio, a Peruvian label.

Delgado Aparicio, recognizing the talent of the young musicians, gave the group an opportunity to record a long play in 1971. Original compositions like "Too Late", "Viajecito" and "The Looser" made this LP an immediate best seller. Black Sugar "Black Sugar" was sold in all South America and there was a release of the LP in USA by a Miami based label.

The success of Black Sugar was not due to luck or marketing. Their members were some of the finest, if not the best, young musician from Peru. The arranger, "Coco" Salazar was also a fantastic guitar player; Miguel "Chino" Figueroa was the composer of almost all the original songs by Black Sugar, besides playing keyboards, he was also an inspired organ player; Jose Cruz was one of the most promising young jazz drummers; it is hard not to mention the rest of the musicians, players like Roberto Valdez, Luis Calixto, Antonio Ginocchio, etc... deserve an extensive description of their abilities.

Amish - Selftitled (1972)

02 - Black Lace Woman
03 - Wise Man
04 - Help Me
05 - I Dont Need Nobody
06 - Dear Mr. Fantasy
07 - The Sea
08 - Down The Road

Band information:

Formed in 1970, Galt, Ontario Formed in 1970 from the remnants of the R & B cover band FJ And The Impressions which included bassist Mike Gingrich and organ player Ron Baumtrog.
Amish started out playing cover versions of McKenna-Mendelson Mainline, The Modern Rock Quartet, The Doors and James Gang songs.

Amish, a sect of people whose love for the natural life has kept them perennially old-fashioned, far from the destructive energies of progress and industry. A life without electricity or automobiles, in harmony with the land. A community of Amish people has grown up in Galt. And when five young musicians were looking for a name that would reflect their admiration and respect for simplicity and a natural way of life they had to look no farther than their neighbours.
