Ruth Copeland - Self Portrait & I Am What I Am

And here is my favorite female singer of all time. Members of Parliament-Funkadelic contributed to both of these albums. These albums would not be the same if not for Eddie Hazel's guitar work. Her cover of "Gimme Shelter" is the best I've heard to this day. Strong female vocals, psychedelic funk. "The Medal" is also a song that is a favorite of mine.

Quicksilver Messenger Service - Discography (1968-72)

Quicksilver Messenger Service - Discography

I wanted to have this legendary band on the blog and here it is. Quicksilver is dear to me. Here is all of their albums, with the exception of Solid Silver released in '75. There isn't much I can say about them as we all probably know the band. However they are still very underrated, I'd have never heard of them if I was never interested in psyche rock. Should have been on a hall of fame of some sort. John Cipollina, is also a favorite guitarist of mine, rest in peace tall man.

Album(s) information:

(1968) - Quicksilver Messenger Service
(1969) - Happy Trails
(1969) - Shady Grove
(1970) - Just for Love
(1971) - Quicksilver
(1972) - Comin' Thru

Band information:

Quicksilver Messenger Service gained wide popularity in the San Francisco Bay Area and through their recordings, with psychedelic rock enthusiasts around the globe, and several of their albums ranked in the Top 30 of the Billboard Pop charts. Though not as commercially successful as contemporaries Jefferson Airplane and The Grateful Dead, Quicksilver was integral to the beginnings of their genre. With their jazz and classical influences and a strong folk background, the band attempted to create an individual, innovative sound. Member Dino Valenti drew heavily on musical influences he picked up during the folk revival of his formative musical years. The style he developed from these sources is evident in Quicksilver Messenger Service's swung rhythms and twanging guitar sounds.

After many years, the band has attempted to reform despite the deaths of several members. Recently, original members Gary Duncan and David Freiberg have been touring as the Quicksilver Messenger Service, using various backing musicians.

Power of Zeus - The Gospel According To Zeus (1970)

Power of Zeus - The Gospel According To Zeus

Power of Zeus will always have a special place in my.. ears, and archive. Unfortunately this is the only album they have released. I still remember discovering "In the Night", I could not recover for days and listen to the song over and over again. This album is a mixture between hard rock, funk and psychedelic rock. "The Death Trip" is also a song I'll note here.

Album information:

01. It Couldn't Be Me
02. In The Night
03. Green Grass & Clover
04. I Lost My  Love
05. The Death Trip
06. No Time
07. Uncertain Destination
08. Realization
09. Hard Working Man
10. The Sorcerer of Isis (The Ritualof the Mole)

Band information:

Power of Zeus was formed in 1968 by Detroit vocalist / guitarist Joe Periano shortly after his release from the Marine Corps. Joe was joined by bassist/vocalist Bill Jones, drummer Bob Michalski & Hammond organist Dennie Webber. Initially going by the name of Gangrene, the Cream/Zeppelin/Sabbath inspired heavy rock quartet became the unofficial house band at the Wooden Nickel club, where they were eventually spotted by a local manager. Motown psyche-oriented subsidiary Rare Earth signed the band on the condition they find a new name.

Having decided upon Power of Zeus they began work on what would become their sole release, 1970's The Gospel According to Zeus LP. The relationship between band and label was strained, with the former claiming that the latter had no experience of recording a heavy rock act, and that the Motown producers had failed to nail their crunchier live sound on tape. Certainly the LP is pretty far removed from the distorto-trash rock of fellow Detroit rockers The MC5 and The Stooges, but what it lacks in grime it makes up for in Super Heavy Funkiness - hammond, bass & drums are to the fore, with production as fat & full as you would expect from the Motown studios. The LP was pretty much a flop at the time, but has since become a highly sought after item, attaining genuine legendary status amongst record collectors - especially those of a hip-hop / breaks orientation, for whom the incredible 'The Sorcerer of Isis (Ritual Of The Mole)' drum & bass break is like manna from Zeus himself. Another one-album band, Parish Hall. Mostly hard rock and a bit of heavy psychedelia is how I'd explain this album. "My Eyes Are Getting Heavy" is probably the most known song by them, however my favorite in the album is "How Can You Win". Listen to this album.

01 - My Eyes Are Getting Heavy
02 - Dynaflow

May Blitz - Selftitled (1970)

May Blitz - Selftitled (1970)

Yet another British band. This album is a mixture of hard, psychedelic and progressive rock. Perfect combination? I'll leave that to the listener. "Smoking The Day Away" is probably my favorite song in the album. Have a listen;

Album information:

01 - Smoking The Day Away
02 - I Don't Know
03 - Dreaming
04 - Squeet
05 - Tomorrow May Come
06 - Fire Queen
07 - Virgin Water

Band information:

May Blitz is a British heavy rock power trio that was active in the early 1970s.

The group was formed in 1969 by bassist Terry Poole and drummer Keith Baker, the rhythm section of the blues-rocktrio Bakerloo, both of whom left the group when guitarist Clem Clempson departed to join Colosseum. Jamie Black joined the group on vocals and guitars but both Poole and Baker left this group as well before it recorded anything, Poole joining Vinegar Joe and Baker Uriah Heep. Black then added fellow Canadian Reid Hudson on bass and Tony Newman, who had played with Jeff Beck, The Hollies and Sounds Incorporated, on drums.

After some time playing pubs in the UK, the group signed with Vertigo Records (in the US they were on Paramount Records) and released their debut album in 1970. A second album followed early in 1971 but the group did not see success quickly and decided to disband in late 1971. Black and Hudson, both originally from Canada, returned to their native country while Newman went on to join Three Man Army.

Liquid Smoke - Selftitled (1970)

Liquid Smoke - Selftitled

Another band that upsets me for having released only one album. Heavy psychedelia with progressive elements; Songs "I Who Have Nothing" and "Reflection" will set you in the mood. They also covered "It's a Man's World", with a beautiful organ solo. Can't miss.

Album information:

01 - I Who Have Nothing
02 - Lookin' For Tomorrow
03 - Hard To Handle
04 - Reflection
05 - Warm Touch

Lincoln St. Exit - Drive It! (1970)

Lincoln St. Exit - Drive It!

LSE, a band formed by Native Americans. You will notice how their origin effected their music. I love everything about this band, including their next band XIT (will be here later). "Man Machine",  "Soulful Drifter" and "Phantom Child" are my favorite songs. Love the lyrics, love the sound; enjoy!

Album information:

01 - Man Machine
02 - Dirty Mother Blues
03 - Got You Babe
04 - Teacher Teacher
05 - Soulful Drifter
06 - Time Has Come Gonna Die
07 - Going Back Home
08 - Straight Shootin' Man
09 - Phantom Child

Band information:

Lincoln Street Exit’s sole album is one of those efforts that’s generated considerable attention throughout the collecting community over the years.

Formed in 1964, the original line up consisted of Paul Chapman, drummer Lee Herres, singer/guitarist Michael Martin and bassist Mac Suazo. A rarity in that it was one of the few mid-1960s native American rock bands (all four members were New Mexico Sioux) to actively tour and record, the group struggled for six years with little recognition; managing to release three instantly obscure singles during that timeframe.

By the time the band was signed to the Detroit-based Mainstream label, Chapman had died replaced by guitarist R.C. Gariss. Teamed with producer Brad Shad 1970’s “Drive It!” served to showcase material from Martin and non-member Tom Bee.

Jeronimo - Discography (1970-72)

Jeronimo - Discography

Jeronimo; my second-favorite band in the archive after Frijid Pink. Good hard rock from Germany. They toured with Steppenwolf and actually released an album together with Creedence Clearwater Revival as Spirit Orgaszmus, which I included in the discography. 4 great albums you'll never get bored of. Enjoy!

Album(s) information:

(1970) Cosmic Blues
(1970) Spirit Orgaszmus & Creedence Clearwater Revival
(1971) Jeronimo
(1972) Time Ride

Band information:

Jeronimo was founded in 1969 and in '69/'70 they had their first two hits "He Ya" and "Na Na Hey Hey". With these two chartbreakers, Jeronimo climbed to the number 1 position in almost all European countries.

In 1970 Jeronimo and "Steppenwolf" toured successfully through Germany and in the same year Jeronimo partook in the legendary "Progressive Pop Festival" in Cologne. Following that, Jeronimo shared the headlines with such groups as "Deep Purple" and "Golden Earring" at various European open-air festivals.

In 1970, Jeronimo, together with Creedence Clearwater, presented the album "Spirit Orgaszmus", which was a success throughout all of Europe.

After 30 years and millions of records sold worldwide, Jeronimo is still cult. In 1999/2000, their hits "Na Na Hey Hey" and "He Ya" were re-released on numerous hit-compilations. The CD's "Cosmic Blues", "Time Ride" and "Best of" have been available in record stores since 1991.

After numerous negotiations with "the purple record-company" in Frankfurt, Ringo Funk successfully acquired the rights to all of Jeronimo's songs in November of 2000. In the spring of 2002, 4 new CD's "Jeronimo", "Cosmic Blues", "Time Ride" and "Best of" will be released, which have been digitally mastered from the original recordings. There will be a bonus track on each of the CD's (partially with previously unreleased material).

Homer - Grown In USA

Homer - Grown In USA

If Zeppelin is the only band left over from 70's that you listen to, well YOU NEED TONS MORE. Homer is a hard rock band with a psychedelic tone, so ahead of their time. This is a great album to have, every song is worth a listen. "Circles In The North" and "Dandelion Wine" are two GREAT songs. Oh, and I hate Zeppelin's fame, being the only band people know of.

Album information:

(01) Circles In The North
(02) Taking Me Home
(03) Dawson Creek
(04) Survivor
(05) In The Beginning
(06) Love's Coming
(07) Four Days And Nights 'Without You'
(08) Cyrano In The Park
(09) Lovely Woman
(10) Sunrise (Bonus)
(11) Dandelion Wine (Bonus)

Band information:

Although Homer's sole and rare album is full of ideas and busy late-psychedelic/early-progressive rock instrumentation, it's a bunch of notions in search of a road map, and ultimately doesn't say much. Sometimes there's similarity to early-'70s British progressive rock in the occasional Mellotron, the multi-sectioned song structures, and the dynamic instrumentation. There are country and folkier touches (including steel guitar), though, which were rare in such British music, sometimes leaving a slight odd feeling of hearing Neil Young (an influence especially audible on "Dawson Creek") intersect with Yesand the Moody Blues. The lyrics sometimes have a verge-on-the-better-world hippie outlook that, while laudable on paper, comes across as kind of sappy. The hard-to-get-a-handle-on eclecticism isn't the problem so much as far more common shortcomings in these kind of psychedelic-era obscurities: a lack of strong songs or gripping originality, despite the undoubted competence of the playing and vocals. The 2002 CD reissue on Akarma adds two tracks from a non-LP 1970 single that are actually the best things on the disc. They have more of an early psychedelic feel than the LP and a tighter focus to the songs, which sound a bit like the kind of guitar-heavy, phased psychedelic pop the Amboy Dukes did on "Journey to the Center of the Mind," or early Spirit.

Frijid Pink - Discography (1970-72)

Frijid Pink - Discography

Here we are, Frijid Pink; my most loved band in the archive. Sometimes I wish they were known world-wide, and sometimes I wish I was the only one who knew their music. Great fucking music, 3 albums. In my opinion, Frijid Pink made the best "House of the Rising Sun" cover, even better than of The Animals'. I want you to listen to Frijid Pink, and at the same time I don't. Go on.

Album(s) information:

Frijid Pink - 1970
Defrosted - 1970
Earth Omen - 1972

Band information:

Frijid Pink was formed when local Detroit-area band the Detroit Vibrations, which featured Stevers and Harris, were joined by guitarist Gary Ray Thompson and singer Tom Beaudry, who later took the stage name Kelly Green. At some point Thompson convinced Vibrations' manager Clyde Stevers (Richard's father) that he was a better musician than the Vibrations' current guitarist. They spent their first two years touring throughout the Southeast Michigan/Detroit area and eventually signed with Parrot Records. Their first two singles, "Tell Me Why" and "Drivin' Blues" (both released in 1969) failed to attract much attention, but their third 1969 effort, a distorted guitar-driven rendition of "House of the Rising Sun," reached the Top Ten on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 in the spring of 1970. This disc sold over one million copies, thereby receiving a gold disc.[1] The track also peaked at No. 4 in the UK Singles Chart.[2] and #3 in the Canadian RPM Magazinecharts. The song was a "filler," using up time at the end of a recording session. The band was so popular in their native Detroit area that a fledgling Led Zeppelin opened for them at Detroit's Grande Ballroom. Frijid Pink often shared billing with the likes of the MC5, the Stooges, the Amboy Dukes, and other local groups of that era.

Frijid Pink's self-titled debut LP followed in 1970, as did their second release Defrosted, with most of the album's writing being provided by duo of Beaudry and Thompson. Subsequent singles including "Sing A Song For Freedom" and a cover of "Heartbreak Hotel" failed to match earlier successes, and after the departure of Beaudry and Thompson, a new lineup was formed featuring David Alexander and later Jon Wearing on vocals, Craig Webb on guitar, and Larry Zelanka on keyboards. This version of the group recorded 1972's Earth Omen. The group would have another lineup in place before re-entering the studio to record 1975's All Pink Inside with Jo Baker on vocals and Larry Popolizio playing the bass.
